Your Guide to Using Uplighting at Your Event

Every last detail of your celebration has been fine-tuned to perfection - a curated menu, hand calligraphed invites, intricate floral bouquets, and more. Despite all of your planning and preparation, you may have overlooked one of the most vital aspects of your event design: the lighting. The choices are endless from fairy lights and bistro bulbs to decorative chandeliers and spotlights. However, it’s uplighting that you have to thank for creating that gorgeous glow - that happens to come in just about any color you could possibly imagine!

So, what exactly is uplighting?

Uplighting is defined as individual lights strategically placed at the base of a point of detail and pointed upwards to draw attention. Uplights primarily function to improve the ambiance of a space.

Where should I place uplights?

Uplights look best when they are lighting something. They can be placed up against just about any surface, we especially recommend using them to highlight architectural details of your venue that would otherwise be overlooked. What you choose to light can range from a blank wall or drapery to dramatic columns or baroque ceilings.

Should I use uplighting in my décor?

The answer is, it depends! I know it’s not as straightforward as you had hoped, but no lighting package is one size fits all. Although there are many events where uplighting certainly complete the look and feel of the event, there are also instances where it isn’t necessary. Nonetheless, there are some guidelines to help you figure out if uplighting is a good fit for your event.

1. Emphasize an Architectural Detail

2. Add a Warm Glow

3. Create a Colorwash

4. Highlight an Object

5. Drapery Illumination

6. Tent Transformation
